Blogging For Beginners: How To Start A Profitable Blog And Make Cool Money

How to start a blog and make money

Having known a few things in our introductory section, let’s now dive into the business of the day.

Staring a blog is very easy, and should not sound so abstract to you. Even if it usually sounds confusing to your ears, I believe I’m hear to guide you.

Step1: Make Research

Before going into any field, the best and the first approach I always recommend is, making research about that field. Gather information about that particular field to know how viable it is; to know what is obtainable in the field; to know the pros and cons in the field.

However, since you have landed in this page, it means you are already doing the research, and you have invariably completed this first step; as long as you read and digest every bit of information that is embedded in this article.

Step 2: Choose Your Niche

As I have explained earlier, a niche is a specific area of topic; a specific area of specialization; a specific area of field which a blog is focused. For example; If your you are blogging about football only, then your broad niche is Sports, while your specific niche is Football.

There are actually bloggers that don’t have a specific niche, such Bloggers are always writing about any topic that comes around. However, I will never recommend this style of blogging to anyone.

It is always advisable to study very well to choose a niche that you will stick to, a niche that you can handle, a niche that is profitable or monetizable as well. Don’t be tempted to be a jack of all trade, master of none. If you must go for other niches, it is advisable you open separate Blogs for those niches, instead of combining them in one blog.

I may not be telling you in this article, the criteria for choosing a niche that is best fit for the Business success. This is because I’m trying everything possible to reduce the word count of this article, so that people can find it easy to read all. You may understand the reading culture of some people… sometimes not encouraging.

How To Choose A Niche For Your Blog

  • Pick a topic you enjoy talking about.
  • Pick a smaller or more specific niche.
  • Do market research and make sure your niche is profitable.

Some Profitable Blog Niches

  • Travel.
  • Health.
  • Fitness and sports.
  • Hobbies.
  • Food.
  • Entertainment.
  • Sports.
  • Finance.
  • Relationships.
  • Family and home.
  • Education and career.
  • Social networks.
  • Politics and society.

NOTE: The best practice is always to narrow down your niche to a more specific niche. The niches I listed above are broad in nature, each of them have many sub- or narrower niches. You may check this article see how you can narrow down each of the Niches I listed above.

However, if you are finding it difficult to choose a niche or that you need a guide in choosing your niche, then WhatsApp us on: 08166581804.

Step3: Choose Your Blog Name/Domain Name

A domain name is simply the address of your site. Meanwhile, your blog name can serve as your domain name. For example; the blog name you are reading now, is Naijaventure. This means our blog address is www.naijaventure.com.

As you can see, every single blog out there has a name which is usually regarded as the domain name.

Remember, everything we are doing here is standard, so your blog name is your business, and should be made standard. You should choose a blog name that is brandable. What I meant by brandable is a name that will look like a business name.

Remember your blog is a business, and you may get a physical office for it, anytime you have the resources. So choose a name that that can easily go far, and be popular.

Your blog name should reflect to the niche you have chosen. So that mere looking at your blog name, one can tell what the business is all about. If you are finding it difficult to choose a name for your blog, you may check HERE for how to choose a name for your business.

Step4: Draft Your Business Plan

Lol… that may sound so abstract you, as what Business plan got to do with blogging. Yes, you need a business plan.

Let me tell you that blogging is a real Business which is even better and more profitable than most Businesses and jobs out there. So, since blogging is a business, you need to take it as a business, you need to prepare a business plan before kicking off.

For any business to be effective, whether new or existing business; there is always a need for a business plan.

In a very simple explanation; a business plan is a formal written document containing the goals of a business, the methods for attaining those goals, and the time-frame for the achievement of the goals.

A business plan is going to serve a road map to achieving your desired success in your blogging Business. Starting a business without a business plan is just like building a house without an architectural plan.

You will hardly see one that will tell you to get a business plan for a blogging Business; but I must be honest with you, that’s the secret of success in any business.

For you to make it in Blogging, you must see blogging as a business; and as such, you need a business plan!

The only exception here is if you are blogging just for fun, not for money. But I guess you want to go into blogging not just for fun. Because since you are searching for how to start a blog and make money, it definitely means your mission is not just for fun.

Writing a business plan is always hectic, and may demand some professional Skills. To guide you better, I have made out my time and have prepared a simple guide on how to write an affective Business plan. You may check it HERE.

Step5: Register Your Domain Name On The Web

Remember that registering your domain name on the web is different from a regular business registration which is usually being regulated by a government.

Domain name registration is the act of reserving a name on the Internet for a certain period, usually one year, and can be renewed yearly. It is important to know that this domain will remain yours for as long as you renew it and there is no way to purchase a domain name forever.

We are still using our domain name: “naijaventure.com” because we registered it, and still renew it yearly. So, for you to start using your domain name, you also have to get it registered on the web.

Where Can I Register My Domain Name?

The place to register your domain is known as a domain name registrar. A domain name registrar is a company that manages the reservation of Internet domain names.

There are millions of domain name registrar out there, of which you can pick any of them to register your domain. However, you can use Harmonweb.com. We use their hosting for some of our websites, and they have been serving us well. So, to register your domain on Harmonweb, Click HERE and follow the process.

How Much Does It Cost To Register A Domain Name?

It costs an a average of N2,000 to N6,000 or above, to register a domain in any registrar, depending on the registrar and the domain name extension

Harmonweb is one of the cheapest registrar we have tested so far. They even give you a free Dot Com Dot Ng (.com.ng) extension if you also buy a hosting plan from them.

Step6: Buy A Web Hosting And Host Your Blog

Web hosting is the process of renting or buying space to house a website on the World Wide Web. For your blog to become functional, and be accessible in the web through a web browser, you must have to host it. Even if you have registered your domain, it is still not accessible until you host it.

Where Can I Buy A Web Hosting?

Most of the domain name registrars out there also offer web hosting service. So you can buy your hosting on the same company where you registered your domain name.

However, Harmonweb.com can give you both services: you can register your domain there and still host it there. Step9: Register Your Blog As A Business (Optional)

In as much as this step is optional, I still rank it highly important if you want to take your blog as a business.

Depending on your country, there are always a government-approved agency that is responsible for registering businesses. For example: in Nigeria, the government agency responsible for registering a business is known as the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

If you have what it takes to register a business, don’t hesitate to register your blog as a business, it has many advantages. One of such advantages is that your audience will always see you as a reliable Business and will never be afraid to do serious business with you. How To Make Money From A Blog

This is definitely one section you might have been waiting for. Since this article is about how to make money blogging for beginners, it may not be complete if I didn’t discuss about various means on how to make money from a blog.

I remember when I was yet to launch a blog, I was always wondering, how on earth do people make money from blogging. This might still be an issue of concern to many people today. But I’m here to clear your doubt.

There are countless number of ways through which you can make money from a blog.

1. Advertising Networks

There are many adverting networks/companies that will pay you to put adverts on your site. However, you must have been getting reasonable traffic on your blog, to Qualify for most of these networks. Even Generally, to earn from your blog through any means, you must have been getting some convertible amount of traffic.

Some of the popular advertising companies that will pay you to advertise on your blog are:

  • Adsense
  • Ezoic
  • Media.net
  • Monumetric
  • AdThrive
  • Mediavine
  • Taboola
  • Outbrain
  • Infolinks
  • Revcontent
  • PropellerAds
  • Adversal
  • BuySellAds
  • Sovrn //Commerce (Formerly VigLink), etc.

How Much Can You Make From Advertising Networks?

There is no limit to the amount of money you can make from these advertising Networks listed above. The major determining factor to how much you can earn, is the Quality and number of traffic your blog generates.

However, on average, with just 1k daily visitors on your blog, you can be earning from  $5 to $20 daily, or even higher, from AdSense only, depending on the Quality of your blog and traffic. This means, with just, 1k daily page views, you will be banking up to $150 to $500 monthly, only from Adsense. Isn’t that so cool?

Remember that the earnings described above is just from a single method of monetizing a blog, which is AdSense ad network. And the interesting thing is that you can combine different methods of blog monetization. Then imagine how much you will be earning if you combine different methods of monetization!

2. Affiliate Marketing

If you check most of my posts in this website, you would always see links to purchase a product or service from a brand, individuals, or company. Anytime a visitor completes any purchase using my link, I will earn a commission for that particular sale.

Remember that those products and services are not mine, but I’m helping the owners to Market them, and still earning making money from the commissions that come from the sales. This is what is known as Affiliate Marketing! It’s a business of helping individuals, brands or companies to market their products/services, and at the same time, earning commissions for the sales made through you.

This is even one of the most lucrative ways of monetizing a blog. As long as you have good traffic, you don’t really need any other work again, just relax, while your visitors buy your affiliate products without even preaching to them. It’s not like these kind of businesses that you would need to convince buyers, no! All you have to do is to put your affiliate Links on your blog, relax, while your visitors keep buying from your links, and you keep earning money from commissions of the sales.

These products/Services we are talking about must not be digital or online products, they can also be physical products, especially within your locality. In fact I cannot count the number of physical affiliate products I have sold through this site.

3. Sell Your Own Product

In as much as you can promote other people’s products, you can also create your own products and sell on your blog. These could be digital products like courses, e-books, physical products or even services.

I cannot count the number of Website Design works that I have got from my blog. I simply advertise my website design Skills here and my visitors keep contacting me for my service. I cannot also count the number of courses and e-books that I have created and sold on this blog.

4. Sponsored Posts

Once you have built a Quality audience, and getting much traffic; many other blogs, brands, or companies will always be reaching out to you to promote their own blog posts. This never comes free, and people are always willing to pay you very high for sponsored posts, once your blog is strong and getting much traffic.

5. Sponsored Ads

This is different from advertising Networks. In this, individuals, brands  or companies which are not advertising Networks, would always be reaching out to you to place their adverts on your site.

6. Guest Posts

Once your blog is strong and have started getting enough traffic, other blogs will always be reaching out to you, to pay you to write on your blog, so you can give them backlinks.

7. Offer Consulting Services

This is another soft way on how to make money blogging. You may not believe the number of people that reach out to me on daily basis, for one consultation or the other. And guess what? I charge them for any guide I provide. As an online marketer, you are always an Authority that everyone is sought out for.

8. Take your expertise offline

Your blog can directly earn you money online, but that’s not your only option. Leverage the knowledge and expertise you’ve built up through your blog to offer your services as a local speaker or presenter.

In fact there are countless number of ways to make money from your blog. But I just highlighted the few ones out of many, because our article is getting too lengthy.

How To Create A Blog For Free On Google And Earn Money

Is it possible to create a blog for free and earn money? The answer is YES! Google has a provision for you to create and manage your blog for free, without paying for domain or hosting.

So, if you are searching for how to start a blog for free and make money, then blogSpot is an option for you. However, this option is mostly for those who really want to go into blogging but don’t have any money yet. It is not recommended for a standard blog.

Remember I have not said you cannot make money from this free blog; you can actually make money from the free Blog, but it’s usually for practice purpose or for those who want to have a blog but don’t have money yet.

Note that the free blog platform will not give you a custom domain name, like the paid one will do. On the free blog platform, you will have a domain address like: example.blogspot.com. But for a paid option, you will have your blog in a professional look like: example.com

So, the Google’s platform where you can create a free blog and earn money is known as: BlogSpot.

To Create a free Blog on blogSpot, follow the guide below: 👇

  • Create an email or login to your email if you have an email already
  • Visit www.blogspot.com.
  • This will take through the email account that you are already logged, to the blog zone.
  • Put the name of your blog that you want to launch.
  • Click on Create blog.
  • Set up/design your blog.

Difference Between A Professional Blog And A Free Blog

For the free blog, you will not have a custom domain name. Your domain name will be created as a subdomain to blogSpot, hence it will look like: example.blogspot.com. But for a professional paid blog, you will have your own custom domain which will look like: example.com.

The advantage of having a custom domain is that it looks shorter, easily to remember by your audience, and more professional in look. If you have a custom domain, anyone that sees it will always know that you are mean/serious for your business, and hence will take your service seriously.

But if your domain is like: example.blogspot.com, people will always take your blog to be owned by a leaner.

While you can still make money from a free blog, I can say from my opinion that, it is easier to make money from a professional blog than a free blog.

Is Blogging Profitable?

If you have followed this post from the beginning, I guess you may no more need an oracle to tell you that blogging is very profitable. Blogging is one of the most lucrative online businesses you can ever think in this present day.

According to my research, Melissa Griffin, one of the richest blogger in the world, makes over $80,000 from a single course she sells on her Blog. Meanwhile, she started blogging in 2013, just a few years ago.

In Nigeria, Linda Ikeji is regarded as the richest or one of the richest Bloggers in Nigeria. And her blog “lindaikejisblog.com” generates about $65,000 every month.

There are countless number of people making it big from Blogging, and I’m sure the two examples above is enough to tell you that blogging is a very profitable business.

What Do You Need To Make Money From Blogging Business?

Do you really need “two heads” to make money from blogging business? The answer is no! Those who are making it big in the business don’t have two heads, they have only one head just like you. So since they are making it in the field, you also have all it takes to make it there as well.

The major thing you need to start making money from your Blog is Good Traffic. Traffic is the engine of earnings in blogging Business. No matter the type of monetization method you want to use on your blog, it can never be effective unless you have enough and quality traffic.

Aside this, you need patience, persistence, hard work, consistency, learnability spirit, teachability spirit, strategic implementations, endurance, ambition, and so on; to succeed in this Blogging Business.

Conclusion

Blogging is one of the most profitable businesses you can think of, if you are looking for a business to start. One interesting thing about Blogging Business is that it doesn’t require much capital to set up, and you can run the business from anywhere; whether from home or from your comfort.
